(Douglasville, GA)- During the Board of Commissioners (BOC) meeting on May 21, 2024, the Board proudly proclaimed May 7th as Dorothy Sparks Day in Douglas County. This proclamation honors the extraordinary contributions of Dorothy Sparks, a trailblazer, educator, and dedicated community leader.
Dorothy Sparks, a native of Douglas County, broke barriers as one of the first African American teachers in the Douglas County School System following the integration of schools in 1967. She holds a degree in Behavioral Sciences from Clark Atlanta University and a master’s degree in secondary education from West Georgia College. Over her 28-year tenure at Douglas County High School, Sparks was celebrated for her dedication and excellence in education, being named Teacher of the Year in 1994. She retired in 1995, leaving a legacy on the school and its students.
Beyond her distinguished teaching career, Sparks served on various community boards. She was the Chairman of the Douglasville-Douglas County Water & Sewer Authority board for five years and led the Family & Children Services Board as Chairman for twelve years.
To honor Dorothy Sparks, the Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation recognizing May 7th as Dorothy Sparks Day. This day celebrates Sparks’ remarkable contributions and unwavering dedication to Douglas County. Her legacy as an educator and community leader continues to inspire and uplift the community.
