(Douglasville, GA) The Douglas County Board of Commissioners has authorized $55,000 for the month of November to be allocated to the Feed Douglas Cooperative, a network of local food pantries serving families throughout Douglas County. This funding will help supplement the community’s food resources in response to the reduction of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits caused by the recent federal shutdown.
The Feed Douglas Cooperative is comprised of nine food pantries that collectively serve approximately 700 families each week. With the reduction in SNAP benefits, the cooperative anticipates an estimated 50% increase in foot traffic, as more families seek food assistance during this difficult time.
“The Douglas County Board of Commissioners remains deeply committed to supporting our residents in times of uncertainty,” said Chairman Dr. Romona Jackson Jones. “We understand that food insecurity can have a devastating impact on families, especially during a federal shutdown. This funding ensures that families have the resources needed and that our community continues to stand together with compassion and resilience.”
The $55,000 allocation is inclusive of $5,000, which District 3 Commissioner Martin Raxton pledged from his office to further assist with this critical effort. In addition to the allocation for November, the Board has also authorized a second $50,000 allocation for December, should the need persist.
To ensure that food assistance remains available for Douglas County residents, all distributed food boxes will be clearly labeled “For Douglas County Citizens,” and individuals receiving assistance will be asked to present valid identification at pickup locations.
The Feed Douglas Cooperative includes the following food pantries:
- Crossroads Church – Douglasville
- First United Methodist Church
- Dreams Come True International
- Good Samaritan Center of Douglas County
- LifeTools/The Pantry
- Love Christian Center
