Douglasville, Georgia – The Douglas County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously 5-0 at the Tuesday, June 8th commission meeting to proclaim June 19, 2021, as Juneteenth Day in Douglas County in observance of its historical significance.

Douglas County Director of External Affairs Tiffany Stewart-Stanley read the proclamation at the virtually held meeting. “Juneteenth is a celebration commemorating the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 and celebrated the notification of the last slaves in Galveston, Texas by General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865,” Stewart-Stanley stated. “We call upon citizens to acknowledge or celebrate June 19th.

The proclamation encourages all to become more aware of the significance of this celebration in African American history and in the heritage of the United State and Douglas County.

Douglas County is proud to join our nation in honoring Juneteenth in an effort to promote and enhance the unity and spiritual strength that brought African Americans out of slavery and sustained their dignity and prosperity to the present day the proclamation states.

A Juneteenth Celebration will be hosted by the Black Education Historical Exhibit a (BEHE) and the City of Douglasville on Saturday, June 19, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at O’Neal Plaza in Downtown Douglasville.
