Homestead Exemptions
NOTICE: Homestead Applications are accepted year-round, however, filing deadline for current year is April 1st
HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION
- Applicant must own & reside in house as of January 1st in order to qualify for current year
- Homeowner must file an application with the Douglas County Tax Commissioner's office on or before April 1st (may apply online or in person)
- Must provide proof of residency at homestead address (State issued I.D or Driver's license and motor vehicle registration with homestead address); other forms of identification may be accepted - please contact office
HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONS AVAILABLE
- Standard Homestead Exemption
- 62 year old Senior: Must be 62 or older as of January 1st
- 65 year old Senior: Must be 65 or older as of January 1st
- 65 year old Senior (Fixed Income): Same as above; must meet income requirements to qualify
- Disability: Must provide two forms of proof permanently disabled or likely to be permanent and unable to be gainfully employed as of January 1st; must provide letter from Social Security Administration stating receiving unemployment benefits and the completed Doctor's Certificate
- OR- two certificates from two different doctors - Disabled Veteran: Must provide statement from VA receiving service-connected disability benefits paid at 100% as of January 1st (see sample letter)
- Surviving Spouse (Armed Forces killed in action or Police Office/Firefighter killed in the line of duty)
